Can music force us to spend more on food?

Several big name restaurant chains appear to think so, with McDonalds, Wagamama and TGI Fridays among the giants of the industry who are signing up to the Spotify-backed service, Soundtrack Your Brand. By generating playlists for business that are tailored to their brand and tuned to put customers in a spendthrift mood, Spotify believes it can increase the average sale values for eateries that adopt its new service.

A recent study appears to back up these claims, with sales of deserts and sides apparently prone to rise when music that more closely suits a restaurant’s brand is played instead of random pop music.

Quite how you match a song with a restaurant brand remains to be seen, but it’s a fascinating story nonetheless and may inspire independent restaurateurs to try similar measures in their own establishments.
